**Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats retain seats in Ontario byelections**
*Toronto – September 3, 2026* – Ontario’s three provincial byelections held on Thursday saw the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party and the New Democratic Party (NDP) keep the seats they had previously held.

**Hamilton East–Stoney Creek**
Long‑time Hamilton city councillor Jeff Beattie won the seat with 38.9 % of the vote, defeating NDP candidate Monique Taylor, who received 33 %. Taylor had represented the neighbouring riding of Hamilton Centre for 14 years before resigning to run unsuccessfully for a federal seat. Liberal candidate Heino Doessing finished third with 23 %.
Premier Doug Ford congratulated Beattie, noting that voters had chosen the party that would “stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.” Ford said, “We’re going to fight against Donald Trump. We’re going to make sure that we protect people’s jobs, protect their communities and protect them.”
Beattie said it was “the honour of a lifetime” to represent constituents at the provincial level. “People are feeling incredible anxiety about the future,” he said. “I want to be the champion of Hamilton East–Stoney Creek in the same way Premier Ford is the champion of Ontario.”
**York–Simcoe**
Conservative Susan Lahey captured the seat with 49.8 % of the vote, defeating Liberal Naomi Davison, who received 38.8 %. Lahey succeeded former Treasury Board President Caroline Mulroney, who resigned in June. The riding has been held by conservatives since its creation in 2007.
**Scarborough Southwest**
The NDP’s Fatima Shaban won the riding with more than 40 % of the vote in a two‑way contest against the Liberal candidate. At her victory speech, Shaban pledged to “fight like hell” to make residents’ lives more affordable. “Today they spoke loud and clear that affordability is a must,” she said.
NDP Leader Marit Stiles also celebrated the win, stating, “It is more clear than ever before in these three byelections that there is only one party that is going to defeat Doug Ford and the conservatives, and it is the New Democratic Party.”
