The Ebonyi State Police Command arrested Ugwumba Enyinnaya on Tuesday for allegedly impersonating a lawyer and practising for more than eleven years. The arrest followed an investigation into a petition that claimed Enyinnaya obtained money through false pretence. According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, the suspect allegedly collected ₦650,000 from a Mr. Chukwu David in March 2026 to facilitate the processing and approval of a street‑naming project in Ohaozara Local Government Area. The petitioner alleged that Enyinnaya presented himself as a lawyer with years of legal experience. During interrogation, Enyinnaya admitted that he was not a lawyer. A search of his apartment uncovered several items that the police described as evidence of the alleged impersonation, including a Nigerian Bar Association seal, a portrait of the suspect in barrister’s regalia, purported Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree certificates bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, a barrister’s robe and wig, and documents such as judgments, powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance that the police said were allegedly prepared by him. The suspect has been charged and is scheduled to appear in court. Commissioner of Police Hope Okafor praised the officers for uncovering the alleged impersonation and urged the public to verify the credentials of anyone offering legal services. She also encouraged residents to report suspicious activities to the police. Article source: The Punch | Image credit: The Punch
