Morant Point’s 1841 Lighthouse Still Guides Ships Along Jamaica’s Eastern Coast

At Jamaica’s easternmost point, a lighthouse dating to 1841 continues to serve passing vessels, according to an April 2026 account published by Adventures from Elle. Morant Point offers a documented example of old infrastructure retaining a practical purpose, although the account cannot establish Jamaica’s oldest working machine. The travel writer describes the St Thomas lighthouse as a navigational aid flashing three white bursts every 20 seconds. Its light serves vessels approaching from the Atlantic or rounding Jamaica’s southeastern coast. The structure is a cast iron tower approximately 30 metres high, with a lantern and gallery above. A semicircular masonry wall around its seaward base provides protection against hurricane surf. The account identifies the Port Authority of Jamaica as its maintenance agency. The writer found the staircase closed during a holiday visit and noted faded paint. Those observations describe the condition encountered on that visit; they do not establish the condition or age of the lighting equipment inside. That distinction matters when considering its longevity. The tower’s construction date does not prove that every operating component dates to 1841. What the account supports is a narrower story: a nineteenth-century coastal structure remains in use as a navigational landmark.
