Paul Put Named Man of the Year for Leading Burkina Faso to Historic AFCON Final

L’Observateur Paalga has named Paul Put as its Man of the Year, recognizing his remarkable achievement in leading the Burkina Faso national football team to the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 final. It was the country’s best performance in the tournament’s history.

Put took over the Etalons amid widespread skepticism. Many doubted his ability to improve on the team’s past failures. Yet the Belgian coach remained focused, insisting that his work would be judged on the pitch. The team’s run to the final in South Africa silenced the critics.

Given the challenging environment before the tournament, the success was anything but guaranteed. Put’s squad exceeded all expectations, reaching the final where they lost to Nigeria. The coach expressed pride in what the team accomplished in such a short time.

“Despite harsh criticism, he stayed the course,” the newspaper noted. “He has made the national team his own and can rightly be satisfied with the result.”

The award from L’Observateur Paalga cements Put’s place in Burkinabe football history. His leadership transformed a struggling side into continental contenders, earning him a reputation that now stands untarnished.
