Alpha Yago: Referendum the ‘Most Democratic’ Path for Article 37

Alpha Yago, deputy secretary in charge of associational movements within the ruling CDP, has thrown his weight behind a referendum to decide Article 37 of the constitution. ‘There is no more democratic approach than a referendum,’ Yago declared, directly challenging opposition voices who view the move as a ploy to extend President Blaise Compaoré’s tenure. Yago, whose entry into active politics surprised many, insists he is no latecomer but a lifelong CDP supporter. He also praised François Compaoré, the president’s special adviser, calling him a statesman of outstanding leadership. The debate over Article 37, which could remove presidential term limits, remains a flashpoint in Burkina Faso’s political landscape.
