Panamá se ofrece para albergar un diálogo entre Estados Unidos y Cuba

Panama has offered to host a dialogue between the United States and Cuba, saying that a neutral venue could help both sides move toward a thaw. On Thursday, Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez‑Acha Vásquez said the country would welcome an opportunity for the two nations to talk. He made the remarks during a visit by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who was in Panama for an official trip. The offer follows Panama’s announcement on Wednesday that it would serve as a venue for talks between the United States and Cuba. The proposal was made in the context of the United Nations General Assembly, where a Cuban‑drafted resolution calling for an end to the U.S. embargo was adopted. The resolution, titled “Need to End the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America on Cuba,” received 130 votes in favor, 17 against and 25 abstentions. It is a non‑binding text that Cuba has presented annually since 1992 to demand the lifting of the embargo that has been in effect since February 3, 1962. In his statement, Martínez‑Acha highlighted Panama’s tradition of neutrality and its history of fostering dialogue. “Panama, with its tradition and history of understanding, could be a space for those conversations. Perhaps a neutral position could allow progress. If both countries wish, they must be willing to talk,” he said. Alongside the invitation to host talks, Panama urged Cuban authorities to strengthen democratic institutions, respect human rights and ensure citizen participation. The country’s proposal is part of its broader effort to promote international cooperation and address longstanding bilateral tensions.
