With warm weather arriving, many Swiss residents take to their balconies to soak up the sun. But if you’re tempted to sunbathe nude, you might want to check your neighbours first. Swiss federal law does not explicitly ban public nudity unless it is considered ‘indecent’—a term left open to interpretation. However, tenants are bound by article 257f of the Code of Obligations to ‘have regard’ for other inhabitants. If neighbours complain, landlords can impose penalties. Municipalities also have their own rules, so what’s tolerated in one commune may not be in another. For a stress-free tan, stick to a bikini or swimsuit, or ensure your balcony is truly secluded.
