Maintaining a clean refrigerator is essential for food safety, hygiene, and reducing food waste. Experts recommend performing a thorough cleaning of the appliance approximately once a month, though immediate attention is required if spills occur, such as leaking meat juices, sauces, or milk, to prevent cross-contamination.

To clean the refrigerator effectively, all food items should be removed, followed by the shelves, drawers, and compartments. These components can be washed with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. The interior walls should be wiped down, with particular attention paid to corners, grooves, and door seals. It is important to use clean cloths and sponges, as damp items can harbor bacteria. All surfaces must be dried thoroughly before reassembling the unit.

While diluted vinegar can be used to help neutralize odors and inhibit microbial growth, caution is advised. Undiluted vinegar should not be applied to rubber seals, as the acidity can cause the material to degrade over time. Abrasive cleaners should also be avoided, as they can scratch plastic surfaces, creating crevices that are difficult to sanitize.

Maintenance should also include checking the drainage hole located on the back wall of the refrigerator, which allows condensation to escape. If this becomes clogged, water may accumulate inside the appliance. This opening can be cleared gently using a cotton swab, avoiding sharp objects that could cause damage.

Proper food storage is equally important for maintaining freshness. The coldest area of the refrigerator is typically located just above the vegetable drawers, making it the ideal spot for perishable items like raw meat and fish. Dairy products and prepared meals are best suited for the middle and upper shelves, while the door, being the warmest part of the unit, should be reserved for items like beverages, butter, and condiments. Food should be stored in sealed containers to prevent odors from spreading and to protect items from moisture, which can condense on the back wall of the refrigerator.
