MV Barima Disaster: Watchdog Accuses Guyana Government of Operating 87-Year-Old Ferry, Lying About Passenger Count

A devastating ferry disaster off the coast of Guyana has sparked allegations of government negligence and a cover-up. The Citizens for Government Integrity and Development (CGID) has accused the government of operating the 87-year-old MV Barima ferry, which capsized on July 11, 2026, en route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma in Region One. CGID Director of Communication Richard Millington, Esq, stated that the vessel was dilapidated and unsafe, and that authorities deliberately misled the public about the number of souls on board. Millington called for the immediate resignation of Minister of Transportation Brooklyn, citing a failure in oversight and accountability. The disaster has reignited calls for a full investigation into the state of Guyana’s public transportation infrastructure and government transparency.
