Musician tackles Ireland’s hidden past in new single

**Limerick‑based artist releases new single addressing Ireland’s institutional past**

Limerick‑based musician Dan O’Neill, who performs under the name **FonnLogic**, has issued a new single titled **“Tidy Town.”** The track draws on the imagery of Ireland’s long‑running community pride competition, but uses it to examine the hidden history of mass institutionalisation in the country during the 20th century.

O’Neill, a writer, activist and educator from rural County Limerick, says the song is “written from the space between the public face those communities present and the reality kept behind closed doors.” It is dedicated to the victims of institutions such as the Magdalene Laundries, Mother and Baby Homes, industrial schools and psychiatric facilities. In an interview, O’Neill noted that Ireland institutionalised a greater share of its population than the Soviet Union did at the height of the Gulag system.

The music is produced in an indietronica style by O’Neill and collaborator Paul Dillon, who work within a fictional 1974 research‑collective mythology. Guitar parts were recorded by Jon Lynch, with creative input from Dillon throughout the writing and production process.

“‘Tidy Town’ isn’t really about one institution or one town,” O’Neill explained. “It’s about how ordinary that silence was: the neighbour, the GP, the local paper, all quietly agreeing not to look too closely. That’s what the song is trying to hold onto.”

The single follows FonnLogic’s previous release, “Jollop,” which came out in July and received airplay on stations including Live 95 FM, West Limerick 102 FM, Near FM, Dublin City FM and KCLR 96 FM.

“**Tidy Town**” is now available on all major streaming platforms.
