Mount Pleasant Take Semifinal Edge After 1-1 Draw With Club Sando in Trinidad

Mount Pleasant Football Academy will take a narrow advantage into next Tuesday’s decisive Concacaf Caribbean Cup semifinal second leg after drawing 1-1 with Trinidad and Tobago’s Club Sando at Hasely Crawford Stadium on Wednesday night. The result leaves the tie finely poised, with both teams still chasing a place in the final.

The Jamaican visitors struck first in the 11th minute through Warner Brown, who capitalised on a counterattacking opportunity after Club Sando had threatened at the other end. Suelae McCalla supplied a well-weighted ball over the top, allowing Brown to accelerate beyond two defenders before finishing past the goalkeeper.

Mount Pleasant had opportunities to strengthen their position before the break. Brown went over the crossbar with another effort, while Trayvonne Reid was unable to convert a penalty in the 35th minute after a Club Sando defender handled inside the area. Goalkeeper Tershorne Ragoo saved Reid’s spot-kick, keeping the hosts within reach.

The visitors continued to threaten, but their inability to add a second goal left the door open for Club Sando. Kimonie Bailey came close to scoring before half-time when his free-kick struck the crossbar, while Mount Pleasant also missed chances early in the second half.

Club Sando eventually made the most of an opportunity in the 56th minute. After Jahshaun Anglin lost possession near the edge of the penalty area, Jaron Pascall took advantage and sent a shot against the post. Daniel David reacted quickest to the rebound and drove a low effort past Mount Pleasant goalkeeper Shaquan Davis to level the score.

The equaliser set up a tense finish, with both sides pushing for a winner. Club Sando nearly completed the comeback five minutes from full-time, but Kyle Ming cleared Marc Wharfe’s goal-bound effort off the line. At the opposite end, Brown threatened after Ragoo spilled possession in the penalty area, but the attempt was deflected over the crossbar.

Club Sando came closest to finding a late winner when Shackiel Henry unleashed a powerful strike that crashed against the crossbar and bounced back into play. Neither team could produce the decisive goal, leaving the first leg level at full-time.

The return match is scheduled for next Tuesday at Jamaica’s National Stadium. Mount Pleasant will aim to turn their first-leg performance into a place in the final, while Club Sando will seek to build on David’s equaliser and make the most of the remaining opportunity in the semifinal. The opening match has left both sides with reasons for encouragement, but the missed chances could prove significant when the tie is decided.
