Moscow was targeted by a large-scale drone attack on Sunday, September 20, resulting in at least two deaths and multiple injuries. According to reports from the Russian news agency TASS and the regional governor, the incident also caused a visible fire at a local refinery.
Regional Governor Vorobyov stated on Telegram that Russian air defense systems neutralized 249 drones across 17 districts. TASS later reported that the total number of drones intercepted while approaching the capital reached 338.
The governor confirmed two fatalities resulting from the strikes. In Sofyino, a drone hit a three-story apartment building, damaging six units on the top floor and killing a 44-year-old woman. A second death occurred in the municipality of Orekhovo-Zuevo, where an elderly resident died after their home was destroyed and set on fire by a drone.
The attack caused structural damage across several areas. Three apartment blocks in the Novye Kotelniki residential complex sustained damage, while a residential building and an industrial facility were impacted in the city of Istra, located northwest of Moscow.
Due to security restrictions implemented in response to the drone activity, more than 30 flights were unable to land at Moscow airports.
