Mexico says TIAR ‘dangerous precedent’ as Venezuela crisis deepens

Mexico issued a stark warning on Wednesday, stating that the invocation of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR) to address the ongoing crisis in Venezuela sets a ‘dangerous precedent for democracy.’ In a statement from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Mexico expressed its ‘deep concern’ over the move by 12 countries. The government categorically rejected the use of the Cold War-era treaty, arguing that it could undermine democratic values. The TIAR activation is part of a broader international effort to pressure the administration, but Mexico’s opposition highlights a fissure in regional consensus. The warning comes as the situation in Venezuela continues to deteriorate.
