Main Points
The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has deployed the Philippines' first 34.5-kilovolt (kV) mobile switchgear, a trailer-mounted unit designed to support substation upgrades while reducing the frequency and duration of power interruptions. The equipment functions as a temporary rerouting mechanism for electricity during maintenance, emergency repairs, and equipment replacements. It is configured with one bus-tie, three feeder breakers, and integrated protective equipment, allowing it to be relocated to various sites based on operational needs. The switchgear is currently in operation at the Sun Valley Substation in Parañaque City. It is providing temporary service to three feeders while Meralco replaces the substation’s existing 34.5-kV gas-insulated switchgear. This deployment ensures that customers in the surrounding areas maintain a continuous power supply throughout the duration of the infrastructure work. "Our priority is to maintain reliable power service to our customers, even as we upgrade and modernize our facilities," said Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Networks Engr. Froilan J. Savet. "With this mobile switchgear, we can carry out critical equipment replacements while minimizing service disruptions. More importantly, we can deploy it to other locations where it is needed, allowing more customers to benefit from this investment." Meralco stated that the acquisition is part of a broader initiative to modernize its distribution network and enhance operational flexibility. The company plans to utilize the mobile unit at other substations requiring temporary power distribution support for future planned upgrades or emergency situations.
