In a bold move, Dangote Industries has chosen Kenya as the site for its anticipated USD 19 billion oil refinery, inciting a competitive energy talk in East Africa. This decision comes after months of discussions and proposals, notably from Tanzanian officials who had previously suggested Tanga as a possible location. However, the final verdict saw Lamu Island in Kenya emerge as the favored position for this monumental project.
The announcement left leaders in Tanzania, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan, reflecting on their energy strategy and collaboration possibilities. President Hassan expressed concerns about not being consulted regarding the initial proposals, raising questions about coordination and communication in regional energy projects. Meanwhile, discussions are still ongoing, as Dangote has opened doors for further infrastructure investments in Tanzania, including power generation and fertiliser plants.
