Kees recalls family losing business, lights being disconnected and father spending months in wheelchair

Kees has opened up about a difficult period in his teenage years when his family suffered major financial hardship after his father’s business collapsed.

He recalled times when electricity was disconnected and basic household items were sometimes unavailable.

Kees said his father operated an electrical business in Marabella, but the company ran into trouble after its parent company failed. He said his father was also involved in an accident and spent approximately nine months in a wheelchair.

The change was significant for the family, which Kees described as having previously enjoyed a more comfortable middle-class lifestyle.

He said the experience affected him deeply as a young teenager and made him determined not to become an additional financial burden on his parents.

That motivation eventually drew him towards earning money through music. Kees recalled discovering that a schoolmate was already making money playing piano and producing tracks, helping him realise that his own musical ability could become a source of income.

He later began performing at weddings, tea parties and other small events with a young group called Class, experiences he said helped build discipline from an early age.
