Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has called on parents to increase supervision of their children’s internet and social media activity. The appeal follows a school shooting incident in Cotabato City that resulted in the deaths of three students, including the 14-year-old suspect, and left eight others injured.
Speaking at a press conference at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Saturday, Remulla stated that the suspect had a history of depression and allegedly accessed the deep web. He urged parents to monitor their children’s online searches, asserting that such oversight is a parental responsibility rather than a privacy violation.
The shooting occurred at Banga National High School on Friday afternoon. Remulla noted that previous school shooting incidents have also been linked to the influence of the dark web, which he suggested can exacerbate mental health struggles in children. He emphasized that the incident should be viewed as a tragedy involving a child with mental health issues rather than a situation requiring the assignment of blame.
Regarding security measures, Remulla defended the performance of barangay tanods and police officers stationed at the school. He explained that while bag inspections were conducted, performing physical body searches on students is considered intrusive and could be misinterpreted.
Remulla called for a collective effort from families, schools, communities, and the government to address the reality of depression among Filipino youth. He advocated for increased access to medical and psychiatric interventions to prevent future tragedies and urged the public to respond with empathy.
