Iranian Currency Hits New Low As US Pressure Intensifies

On September 8, 2026, Iran’s rial fell to a new low against major foreign currencies, reaching up to 2.4 million rials per U.S. dollar, 2.7 million rials per euro, and 3.1 million rials per British pound, according to currency‑market websites. The Emami gold coin also rose to 2.4 billion rials.

The depreciation coincided with intensified U.S. military and economic pressure on Tehran. U.S. forces reported the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman after the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps twice launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. warship. On the same day, Washington announced sweeping new sanctions against Iran’s aviation sector under its Operation Economic Outcast campaign, designating 36 targets and sanctioning all remaining Iranian airlines. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned companies that doing business with Iranian airlines could result in being cut off from the global financial system.

Iran’s Statistical Center reported an annual inflation rate of 89 percent in August, with food and beverage prices rising 127.5 percent year‑on‑year. Iranian lawmakers warned on August 31 that volatility in currency, gold, and coin markets was increasing economic uncertainty.

In related developments, satellite imagery analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) showed a surge in construction activity at Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain complex near the Natanz nuclear facility. The imagery revealed more road activity than at any previous point in the site’s history, including hardening tunnel entrances, paving internal roads, reinforcing access areas, and removing excavation spoil. CSIS stated that the imagery could neither confirm nor refute reports that Iran moved centrifuges and centrifuge components into Pickaxe Mountain last year. The lack of increased internal security and the absence of non‑construction vehicles suggested that the facility was not yet capable of enrichment work, if that is its intended purpose.

These events highlight the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, as well as the broader economic challenges facing the Iranian economy.
