A 18‑year‑old college student, Rabbil Hasan, was found hanging in the Khola Baliya Pukur area of Khulra Upazila, Thakurgaon, on Saturday afternoon. Hasan, the son of Ramadan Ali, had recently received his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) results and had failed the English paper. According to family members, the disappointment over the result led him to take his own life. Ramadan Ali told reporters that his son had been somewhat inattentive in his studies but had never imagined he would make such a drastic decision. “The disappointment of the exam results emptied my heart,” he said. Police officer Abdul Hakim Adad confirmed that the student had broken down mentally after failing the exam. Following the family’s request, the body was handed over for burial after the necessary legal procedures were completed. The incident comes amid a broader pattern of poor performance in the district’s HSC examinations. None of the nine educational institutions in Thakurgaon—Saldar Women’s College and Kadamrul Hat School & College in Sadar Upazila; Harinmari School & College, Morolhat Jontro School & College, and Ratnayi Bugulabari School & College in Balia Danga; Ektaipuri Shaheed Salahuddin School & College in Pirganj; Dholjhari School & College in Rani Shankail; Gogra College; and Raotnagor School & College—had any students pass. A total of 38 students from these schools sat for the exam. Across the district, 9,857 candidates appeared for the HSC, of whom 4,439 passed, giving a pass rate of 45.3 %. Seventy‑eight students achieved a GPA‑5. District Education Officer Shahin Akhtar attributed the zero‑pass rate at many institutions to inadequate teaching quality, noting that most of the affected schools are private and lack proper infrastructure. District Administrator Rafiqul Hok added that the majority of the non‑passing institutions are non‑MPO (non‑government‑affiliated) and suffer from insufficient facilities. An investigation into the causes of the exam failures is underway. Article source: Ajker Patrika | Image credit: Ajker Patrika
