Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed the visit would address bilateral relations, though he stated he was unaware of any specific proposals from the United States being carried by the minister.
Despite the push for negotiations, Rezaei emphasized that Iran has adjusted its military strategy toward the United States. He claimed that Iranian military planning is increasingly focused on American naval assets in the region and asserted that Iran recently tested an anti-ship missile near a United States naval asset. These claims regarding military capabilities could not be independently verified.
Rezaei also addressed the status of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, stating that Iran has not decided to withdraw from the agreement. He maintained that Tehran remains committed to its religious prohibition against nuclear weapons, though he noted that the country’s position could be subject to change based on future actions by the United States.
The current diplomatic overtures follow the expiration of a memorandum of understanding in August that was intended to halt hostilities. Both Iran and the United States previously accused one another of violating the terms of that agreement.
