How Icelandic Place Names Preserve Stories of Steam, Settlement and Political Life

Icelandic place names can serve as small records of how people understood their surroundings. Reykjavík and Þingvellir offer two examples: names that describe a landscape while preserving associations with settlement and political life.

An explanation published by Icelandic Mountain Guides describes many Icelandic geographical names as combinations of smaller, descriptive words. Those combinations can identify a physical feature, recall a person or preserve a connection to an activity. Reading a name therefore offers a starting point for understanding a place, although the stories attached to it require their own care.

Reykjavík means “Smoky Bay”. The guide recounts the traditional explanation that Ingólfur Arnarson saw geothermal steam rising when he arrived in the area. Under that account, the name preserves an observer’s impression of the landscape. The translation and the settlement story are related, but they are different kinds of evidence: a name’s meaning does not independently establish every detail of its origin story.

Þingvellir makes a different connection visible. Understood as “Parliament Plains” or “assembly fields”, its name reflects the site’s political function. Iceland’s Alþingi was established there in 930, according to the guide. Here, the name points beyond the terrain to the activity that made the location significant.

The guide also reports that the national park contains more than 800 place names, some associated with the historic assembly and old travel routes. That density suggests how much detail can disappear when a landscape is understood only through its best-known landmarks.

These examples support a modest but useful conclusion: some familiar Icelandic names carry descriptions and historical associations into present-day speech. They offer an entry into local history, provided literal meanings, documented events and traditional explanations are kept distinct.
