How Albanian Communities Abroad Turned Migration Into a Network of Cultural and Diplomatic Influence

Albania’s relationship with its citizens abroad extends beyond migration and family ties. According to a Migration Policy Institute feature, Albanian diaspora communities have increasingly served as bridges between Albania and other countries, helping maintain cultural traditions, support newcomers and contribute to the country’s international profile.

The institute reported that approximately 2.3 million Albanian citizens lived abroad in 2025, representing nearly half of Albanian nationals worldwide. The figure highlights the scale of a population whose connections span Europe, North America and other destinations. The broader diaspora also includes descendants of Albanian migrants who may retain cultural, family or community links with their ancestral homeland.

The history of this diaspora reflects sharply different periods of migration. During the communist era, from 1944 to 1990, Albania was politically and economically isolated, and its borders were tightly controlled. The Migration Policy Institute describes how the small number of people who managed to leave sometimes faced severe risks. Routes out of the country included crossing remote mountains into Greece or Yugoslavia, as well as attempting sea crossings toward Corfu or across Lake Shkodra toward Montenegro.

Some of those who left sought asylum in Western Europe, the United States or Canada. Over time, politically active communities and organized associations developed abroad. These networks helped preserve Albanian identity, maintain language and cultural traditions, and advocate for causes important to Albanians.

The period after the communist system ended brought a different scale and pattern of migration. The institute identifies poverty, unemployment, weak infrastructure and underperforming public services among the factors driving emigration. Italy and Greece became major destinations, helped by geographical proximity and cultural, linguistic and economic connections. The United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom also attracted Albanian migrants.

The communities that formed in these countries have played roles in both their adopted homes and Albania. In the United States, Albanian diaspora associations have helped newly arrived migrants, strengthened community ties and maintained cultural traditions. These activities make the diaspora more than a population living abroad: they create networks through which language, expertise, social support and public advocacy can move across national boundaries.

The institute also describes a diplomatic dimension to these relationships. Albanian officials have increasingly engaged diaspora networks as a means of advancing international priorities, including the country’s ambition to join the European Union. Individuals with professional expertise, public visibility or established relationships abroad can connect Albanian interests with audiences and institutions in other countries.

The feature names figures such as singer Dua Lipa and technology entrepreneur Mira Murati as examples of the range of contributions associated with Albanian heritage. Their careers illustrate the diversity of the global Albanian presence, although the diaspora’s influence also depends on less visible work carried out through families, associations and community organizations.

Migration has brought significant challenges and personal upheaval, but it has also produced enduring international networks. The Albanian diaspora’s story shows how people living outside their country of origin can preserve cultural identity while building relationships that connect their communities to wider economic, social and political life.
