Guyana: Gas-to-energy project on course for first turbine by year-end -Min. Indar

The government of Guyana is anticipating that the first gas turbine under its gas-to-energy project at Wales will begin generating electricity by December. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance the country’s energy infrastructure. Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, discussed the project on the Starting Point Podcast, indicating that the first 57-megawatt Siemens gas turbine is scheduled to come online later this year under a revised contract.

Following the initial turbine, three additional gas turbines are expected to be commissioned approximately three months later, which will increase gas-fired generation capacity to 228 megawatts. Subsequently, two steam turbines are anticipated to follow, bringing the total generating capacity of the plant to 300 megawatts.

Minister Indar highlighted that the project aims to reduce electricity generation costs by substituting imported heavy fuel oil with natural gas. To facilitate the new power plant, the government has invested over US$722 million in various upgrades to the national grid, including transmission lines and substations.

These upgrades encompass the establishment of a new 230-kilovolt transmission network, enhancements to substations, and the development of a national control center, all intended to improve the reliability of electricity supply along the coast. The minister noted that consumers should experience a more stable electricity supply once the project becomes operational, as the Siemens turbines are designed to recover more quickly from system disturbances compared to the existing engines used by Guyana Power and Light.

While acknowledging that some temporary power outages may persist during the upgrade process and the transition of customers to the new infrastructure, Indar emphasized that these efforts are essential for modernizing the country’s electricity network.
