Guyana: CANU Seizes $80m In Foreign Cannabis, Five Firearms In Georgetown Raid

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has conducted a significant operation in Georgetown, Guyana, targeting transnational drug syndicates. On July 1, 2026, CANU executed a tactical raid on a suspected safehouse located on Princess Street. The operation led to the seizure of approximately $80 million worth of high-grade foreign cannabis and five illegal firearms.

During the raid, several suspects were apprehended at the scene and are currently being held in high-security detention at CANU headquarters. They are undergoing interrogation as investigators work to uncover the domestic distribution network and trace the source of the contraband. The operation was initiated based on precise intelligence regarding an incoming shipment of foreign narcotics, commonly referred to as “creeper” or “poppy” marijuana.

CANU tactical units cordoned off the area surrounding the safehouse on Wednesday afternoon. A thorough search of the premises resulted in the discovery of 86 bulk, vacuum-sealed parcels of cannabis, weighing a total of approximately 98.32 pounds (44.6 kg).

  • Contraband Volume: 86 industrial, moisture-proof vacuum-sealed parcels
  • Total Weight: 98.32 pounds (44.6 kg) of high-potency imported cannabis
  • Estimated Street Value: $80,000,000 (GYD)

In addition to the narcotics, the operation uncovered four semi-automatic pistols and one tactical assault rifle. These weapons have been sent to the Guyana Police Force Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic testing, which will help determine if they are linked to recent violent incidents in the region.

While the identities of the detained suspects have not been disclosed, officials indicated that this operation is part of a broader effort to combat weapon trafficking. This raid follows a recent discovery of military-grade firearms in Schoonard, indicating ongoing efforts by law enforcement to disrupt organized crime activities in urban areas.
