Guyana: Guyana Advocates for Free Elections and Economic Reforms in Cuba

Guyana has expressed its position regarding the situation in Cuba, stating that the Cuban people should determine their future through free and fair elections. The Guyanese government has also called for diplomatic discussions aimed at easing tensions, particularly in light of ongoing calls from the United States for democratic reforms and economic changes in Cuba.

In a statement from the foreign affairs ministry, it was noted that any resolution to the current situation should reflect the will of the Cuban people and adhere to universal values, including the rule of law, humanitarian principles, transparency, and good governance. The ministry referenced the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, which emphasizes that the authority of government should be based on the will of the people, expressed through periodic and genuine elections.

Guyana has reiterated its solidarity with the Cuban population and expressed support for sustainable solutions to the economic and humanitarian challenges facing the country. This statement comes in the wake of significant economic reforms introduced by the Cuban government, which are seen as a response to fears of potential U.S.-led intervention aimed at displacing the current administration.

The Guyanese government advocates for diplomatic dialogue as a means to foster stability and prosperity for the Cuban people, aiming to create opportunities that maximize their potential within a supportive economic framework. In a recent interview, the Guyanese leader emphasized the necessity of a transition that would enable Cubans to experience both prosperity and democracy.

Additionally, the United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights affirms that every citizen has the right to participate in public affairs and to vote in genuine elections. Trinidad and Tobago, another Caribbean nation, has also joined in calling for democratic reforms in Cuba.
