Guterres voices “deepest regret” over US visa denial to Palestinian president

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deepest regret on Friday regarding the United States government’s decision to deny a visa to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. This marks the second consecutive year that the Palestinian leader has been blocked from attending the UN General Assembly.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Guterres is concerned about the implications of this decision for the State of Palestine’s ability to participate fully in the work of the United Nations.

The United States State Department announced the visa denial on Thursday. Officials cited a lack of reforms by the Palestinian Authority as the primary reason for the decision. While the Palestinian delegation, including President Abbas, has been denied entry, the State Department noted that members of the existing Palestinian mission to the United Nations will be permitted to participate in the upcoming annual session.
