On Thursday, the revitalised Fiesta Bridge over the Váh River in Trenčín was inspected by the presidents of the Visegrád Group (V4) during a two‑day summit hosted by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini. The summit also welcomed Czech President Petr Pavel, Polish President Karol Nawrocký and Hungarian President András Baku. Mayor Richard Rybníček presented the bridge to the presidents, describing it as a “Eiffel Tower of Trenčín” and stressing its importance for the city and for Slovakia. He said the bridge is one of the key projects for the European Capital of Culture designation for Trenčín in 2026. Rybníček highlighted President Pellegrini’s support, noting that the former prime minister had previously backed the idea of transforming the old railway bridge into a street. “Transforming the old railway bridge into a street will create another landmark for Trenčín, especially after the Trenčín Castle. It will attract tourists, visitors and enhance the city’s media image,” Rybníček said. “I am convinced that we are building something that will be recorded in the history of Trenčín.” President Pellegrini praised the bridge after the inspection, saying it was “much more beautiful than I had imagined.” He described it as a “wonderful, multifunctional work of art that offers a view of Trenčín Castle.” He added that the bridge provides a place where people can sit surrounded by greenery, and that it will include sports facilities, cafés, restaurants and community spaces. “It will be a new symbol of Trenčín and will attract many foreign visitors,” he said. The Fiesta Bridge was created by reconstructing the former railway bridge, which was originally slated for demolition. The city tendered the project for about €10.7 million; the final cost rose to approximately €11.7 million due to objective reasons. Eighty percent of the funding came from European Union funds under the European Regional Development Fund (EHMK), with the remainder financed by the Slovak state and the city of Trenčín. The bridge is roughly 250 metres long, includes a dedicated bike lane, and will host gastronomic venues, sports facilities and cultural spaces from spring next year. It is connected to a newly created park along the Orechovský stream. The V4 summit in Trenčín also featured the first participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Discussions focused on the future of the European Union, its expansion, and long‑term stability and security. The leaders also addressed Ukraine, particularly the need for assistance before winter, post‑war reconstruction, and its European prospects, as well as the availability and pricing of energy.
