EN DIRECT – Colère sociale : après un 5 novembre “réussi” dans la rue, les regards se tournent déjà vers samedi

On Thursday, 5 November, France saw a large protest against the high cost of living. According to the Interior Ministry, about 575 000 people marched in the streets, including 65 000 in Paris. The trade union CGT reported a figure of 1.6 million participants, with 350 000 in the capital. The demonstrations were largely peaceful, featuring music and a convivial atmosphere. Participants included private‑sector workers, civil servants, retirees and young people. Police recorded 448 arrests and 53 injuries among officers. Despite the large turnout, there were no reports of riots or looting. The Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, said the marches “generally went well,” although tensions were noted in several cities. In response to the protests, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced a “social conference” to be held on Monday, 6 November, to discuss wages and purchasing power. He asked the Minister of Labour, Jean‑Pierre Farandou, to finalize consultations on these issues. The conference will involve leaders of major employer organisations, including Patrick Martin of Médecins du Monde, Amir Reza Tofighi of the Entrepreneurs’ Association, and Michel Picon of U2P. Youth organisations and the Gilets jaunes movement have pledged further actions. The student union UNEF called for continued pressure on the government, stating, “For the government to concede, we will not give up; meet us on 7 November.” The next planned protest is scheduled for Saturday, 7 November, as part of the movement’s “Act IV” launched on 17 October.
