Egypt’s GERD Battle Driven by Politics, Not Water Threat, Experts Argue

International experts are increasingly questioning the basis of Egypt’s opposition to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), arguing that the dispute is less about hydro-technical risks and more about political maneuvering. Professor Al Mariam, a political analyst, states that Egypt’s repeated accusations of Ethiopian ‘unilateralism’ are a continuation of an old narrative aimed at preserving downstream influence. Mikael Alemu, an energy expert, insists the GERD poses no significant threat to water flow, saying ‘its claim sounds much more like political.’ The GERD, now operational, has fundamentally altered the balance of power in the Nile Basin, challenging Egypt’s historical dominance. Experts urge a shift toward cooperation, as continued confrontation may prove counterproductive for Egypt.
