Dwayne Bravo has issued a direct challenge to the men of Trinidad and Tobago, saying that staying silent when friends or peers abuse women makes them part of the problem. In a video posted to Instagram, the cricketer said he felt compelled to speak out after seeing videos circulating on social media.
Bravo described the continuous attack and abuse against women as something that does not sit right with him, calling physical abuse in any form unacceptable. He said the issue affects both men and women, with men also experiencing physical and verbal abuse, but he wanted to speak directly to men.
“To my brothers, to my friends, to the fellow guys of Trinidad and Tobago, even if you yourself don’t take part in you personally doing those things, but your inner circle or your friends, the people that are close to you do it, and you stay silent, you’re also a problem,” Bravo said. “You also a problem.”
He called for open discussion about what may be triggering men to act abusively, saying he did not know what it was but that something had to be behind it. Bravo also stressed that men must take ownership and responsibility for their own actions to help make the country a better and safer society.
The video, captioned with a message for the men of Trinidad and Tobago and the hashtag #StopDomesticViolence, had drawn more than 3,400 likes by the following day. Bravo said he hoped the message would spread across the nation.
“Fellas, we HAVE to do better. Every single one of us has to play our part for our families, our community and our country,” he wrote in the post.
