Dr Amery Browne Files EOC Complaint Against PM Over Alleged Racially Offensive Posts
Opposition Senator Dr Amery Browne has filed an official complaint with the Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, accusing her of repeatedly using racially offensive language on her public Facebook page.
Browne announced the move on social media, saying the complaint relates to statements made by the Prime Minister from August 1, 2026, onward.
“Today, based on the public conduct of Kamla Persad-Bissessar in clear breach of the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, I filed an official complaint against the Prime Minister with the Equal Opportunities Commission,” Browne wrote.
Browne alleged that Persad-Bissessar had “repeatedly and incessantly” used what he described as racial slurs through her public Facebook account. He characterised the language as insulting and offensive and alleged that it was intended to encourage animosity and hatred.
According to Browne, people across different ethnic groups have spoken out against the Prime Minister’s recent statements. His complaint asks the EOC to examine whether her conduct falls within provisions of Trinidad and Tobago’s equal opportunity laws.
The complaint comes amid heightened public debate over race, political rhetoric and the use of racially charged terminology in public discourse.
In material shared alongside his announcement, Browne highlighted provisions dealing with “offensive behaviour,” including conduct alleged to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or group because of gender, race, ethnicity, origin or religion, where there is an intention to incite hatred.
The filing of the complaint does not establish that Persad-Bissessar has breached the Equal Opportunity Act or committed an offence. Browne’s claims remain allegations to be considered by the relevant authorities.
