De ce pierdem turiști în fața Greciei și Turciei. Dragoș Anastasiu: „Concurentul unui hotel din România nu mai este hotelul de peste drum”

The Romanian tourism industry is facing increased competition as travelers become more informed and selective, according to Dragoș Anastasiu, founder of the Eurolines Group. Anastasiu noted that hotels in Romania no longer compete solely with local neighbors, but with international destinations such as Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Italy, and Spain.

In an interview regarding the current state of the sector, Anastasiu highlighted that while Romanians have not abandoned travel, they are increasingly price-conscious and demanding. Data from Eurostat indicates that the number of Romanians taking trips increased by over 30 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, with international travel showing significant growth. However, official data for June 2024 showed a 2.5 percent decline in arrivals at Romanian accommodation facilities and a nearly 6 percent drop in overnight stays, suggesting that tourists are shortening their trips or seeking more affordable alternatives.

Anastasiu attributed the shift toward foreign destinations to better predictability, infrastructure, and service quality, as well as improved flight connectivity. He argued that Romania possesses significant tourism potential in areas such as the Danube Delta, Transylvania, and the Carpathian Mountains, but struggles to convert these resources into competitive tourism products. He emphasized that the industry should focus on creating unique experiences rather than competing solely on price.

The rise of artificial intelligence is also expected to reshape the market. Anastasiu noted that AI tools are changing how travelers plan vacations by shifting from traditional search engines to recommendation-based models. He suggested that travel agencies must adapt by providing higher value, such as personalized consulting and exclusive experiences, rather than focusing on simple booking services.

These industry challenges and the impact of digitalization are set to be discussed at the Travel Forum 2026, scheduled for September 29 at the Sheraton Bucharest Hotel. The event will address topics including shifting tourist preferences, the role of travel agencies, and the integration of new technologies in the global tourism economy.
