Residents of the Fu’an community in Xing’an League, Inner Mongolia, are strengthening social ties through shared cultural activities and volunteer initiatives. The community, which houses over 9,000 people from various ethnic backgrounds, has established programs that integrate dance, traditional celebrations and public service to foster local unity.
Wang Jinrong, a retired ethnic Mongolian resident, leads a community dance group that performs traditional routines from multiple ethnic groups, including Mongolian, Uyghur and Korean styles. The group, which includes members of different ethnicities, participates in local festivals and community events to build interpersonal connections.
Local officials have focused on developing shared spaces to support these interactions. In 2025, the community partnered with the China Sports Lottery to convert an idle building into a 300-square-meter activity center. The facility, which is open to all residents regardless of age or background, provides space for sports, reading and social gatherings. Zhang Ruixin, the Party secretary of Fu’an community, stated that the neighborhood is designed as a shared home where residents can participate in decision-making processes regarding local facilities.
Volunteerism also plays a significant role in the community’s social structure. A youth environmental volunteer association, registered in Fu’an in 2020, has grown to include more than 3,000 registered volunteers from diverse ethnic groups. The association conducts environmental education and provides care programs for children during school vacations across more than 30 communities in the league.
Xing’an League is home to 40 ethnic groups, with ethnic minorities comprising approximately half of its 1.3 million permanent residents. The region holds historical significance as the site where the autonomous government of Inner Mongolia was established in 1947.
