Cyprus must transition away from its reliance on diesel and natural gas to secure a sustainable energy future, according to Cyprus Institute president Stavros Malas. Speaking on Friday during a visit to the institute’s PROTEAS research facility in Pentakomo, Malas emphasized that the country must prioritize the development of sustainable energy storage alongside renewable power generation.
Malas noted that as a geographically isolated island, Cyprus faces unique challenges that require long-term planning to avoid the continued production of expensive electricity. He described the PROTEAS facility as a model for the country, serving as a site to test technologies for both renewable energy production and storage.
Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou, who toured the facility to review ongoing research, stated that the site demonstrates Cyprus’s potential to evolve beyond being a mere energy consumer. Damianou suggested that the country could attract innovative companies capable of developing solutions for the changing global energy landscape.
The PROTEAS facility serves as an experimental platform for the Cyprus Institute, focusing primarily on concentrated solar thermal energy and energy storage. The laboratory allows researchers to test solar technologies under local climatic conditions, with the goal of advancing systems suitable for regions with high solar potential. The institute reported that its research has already attracted interest from private companies, some of which have utilized the facility’s heliostats to support innovation.
During the visit, Damianou was accompanied by the deputy ministry’s director of research and innovation, Constantinos Kleovoulou. The delegation received a briefing on the laboratory’s work, including research initiatives aimed at addressing climate change.
