Norwegian author Guri Idsø Viken releases new WWII novel “Utyske” Guri Idsø Viken, who achieved a breakthrough last year with the historical novel Krakk, has published a new book set during the German occupation of Norway in World War II. The novel, titled Utyske and released by Aschehoug, spans 358 pages. The story is set in the rural district of Overhalla in Namdalen, a region that, during the war, had one of the highest ratios of German soldiers to Norwegian residents in Europe. It follows two young residents, Solveig and Sveinung, who are best friends and dance partners at local village festivals. Both dream of leaving their small community, but the war disrupts their plans. Solveig, a farm girl from the estate Stormoen, remains in the village. Her father is a local National Socialist (NS) leader and her mother is sympathetic to the German occupiers. Sveinung, meanwhile, takes responsibility for the neighboring farm Lissmoen after his older brother Arnstein is absent. The arrival of German officer Hugo Lehmann and his secretary Mario at Stormoen introduces new dynamics. Solveig eventually falls in love with Lehmann, while Sveinung and Mario develop a relationship during a summer evening. The novel explores the complexities of these relationships, the moral dilemmas faced by the characters, and the broader context of life under occupation. Utyske incorporates research on farm life and the experiences of ordinary Norwegians during the final years of the occupation. It also touches on lesser‑known aspects of Norwegian wartime history, including the involvement of Sami people in resistance activities and the presence of Ukrainian prisoners of war. The book has been described as a love story set against the backdrop of war, with an emphasis on the moral gray areas that individuals confronted during the occupation. It aims to bring to light personal narratives that are often absent from mainstream historical accounts.
