Dr. David Estwick has been elected as the new president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) following a vote held during the party’s annual general conference. The election took place at the DLP headquarters on George Street, St Michael, where party members gathered despite inclement weather to await the results.
Estwick, a former Member of Parliament for St Philip West, secured the presidency with a total of 217 votes against 136 votes for his opponent, Stephen Lashley. The results were announced at 11:10 p.m. on the second day of the conference. Following the announcement, both candidates shared a moment of camaraderie, embracing and exchanging smiles.
Lashley, who has served as the DLP’s acting president for the past five months, stepped into the role after the resignation of former Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne. Thorne’s resignation followed a significant electoral defeat, marking the third consecutive loss for the party in recent elections.
In a statement to the media after his election, Estwick expressed his intention to invite Lashley and other experienced party members, including former Cabinet colleague Donville Inniss, to assist in the rebuilding efforts of the DLP. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “Stephen and I have been good friends for many years. And I said to him just now, ‘my brother I need you. I need your expertise and I need your experience.’”
Estwick further indicated that he would be reaching out to other seasoned members of the party to help manage its affairs and work towards regaining the trust of the electorate. He assured that all future actions would be conducted in accordance with the DLP’s constitution.
As part of the leadership transition, Estwick is set to deliver his inaugural address as president on the final day of the annual general conference, which marks the 71st year of the DLP’s existence.
In addition to Estwick’s presidency, the DLP has also elected other members to its executive council. The newly appointed officers include:

- Fourth Vice President: Damien Fanus
