Kathmandu, 13 Kartik 2024 – The United Nations General Assembly, in its 81st session, unanimously adopted a resolution extending the preparation period for Nepal and Bangladesh to be removed from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) list until 24 November 2029. The resolution, numbered 81/L.8, was passed at the UN headquarters in New York. The Nepalese Permanent Mission to the United Nations confirmed that the decision gives the country additional time to implement the structural and institutional reforms required for LDC status removal. “This extension allows Nepal to strengthen its production capacity, institutional frameworks, and to advance economic and social transformation,” the mission said. It also highlighted the importance of a smooth transition strategy, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Doha Programme of Action in ensuring a seamless shift out of LDC status. The resolution is expected to help Nepal achieve a “smooth, sustainable, and irreversible” transition from the LDC category. The mission expressed gratitude to all UN member states for their continued cooperation, unity, and support in this process.
