Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s four‑day official visit to Japan began on Monday, 29 October, when she arrived at Narita International Airport on a Bangladesh Airlines flight at 9:05 a.m. local time (6:05 a.m. Bangladesh time). She was welcomed by Japanese Foreign Minister Yasutaka Nakasono. The prime minister, accompanied by his wife Dr. Jubaida Rahman, had departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday, 26 October, at 12:10 a.m. Bangladesh time, also on a Bangladesh Airlines flight. During the visit, which will last until 2 November, the prime minister will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and other senior officials to strengthen bilateral relations. Discussions will focus on ongoing infrastructure projects such as the metro rail, reducing the cost and interest rates of loans, attracting Japanese investment, and expanding trade and economic cooperation. The prime minister is scheduled to hold a high‑level bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Kishida in Tokyo on Tuesday. He will also deliver a keynote address at the Japan‑Bangladesh Economic Forum and meet with Japanese business leaders. Planned meetings include top officials from JICA, JETRO, JBCI, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. Site visits are planned to an LNG terminal, a power plant, the Uniqlo headquarters, and a Toyota factory. Foreign Minister Asad Alam Syed said at a press conference on 20 October that the visit would deepen the existing strategic partnership and attract more Japanese investment. He added that the trip would accelerate trade expansion and the pace of ongoing development projects. The two leaders will give special attention to the implementation of the Bangladesh‑Japan Economic Partnership Agreement signed in February 2026, increasing Bangladesh’s access to the Japanese market and strengthening business ties. The foreign minister also noted that the visit will cover a draft Memorandum of Understanding and cooperation agreements on agriculture, fisheries, human resource development, skill enhancement, civil aviation, trade, environmental protection, and local government modernization. Several MOUs are expected to be signed during the visit.
