Kathmandu, 8 Kārtik — The contribution of Nepali female peacekeepers has further enhanced the country’s international standing. In the United Nations‑sponsored peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Nepali women have played a leading role in safeguarding civilians, building community trust and ensuring the safe participation of conflict‑affected girls in examinations. Under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Ravan Thapa, the contingent commander of the Nepali peacekeeping force, a female battalion has been actively engaged in regular patrols, community dialogue, security team operations and emergency missions. Following a violent incident earlier this week, the battalion was deployed immediately from the UN base to reinforce security through patrols and patrol‑based measures, according to UN reports. The United Nations Peacekeepers (UN‑PK) highlighted the battalion’s efforts in a recent Women, Peace and Security (WPS) profile. The report praised the specialized security strategy adopted by the female peacekeepers to protect women and children in conflict‑affected areas and commended their success in escorting nine students to an examination centre, thereby enabling them to participate safely in their exams. UN officials have reiterated the importance of full, equal and meaningful participation of women in peacekeeping operations. They noted that the presence of Nepali women on the ground helps identify the security needs of local women and girls, strengthens community relations and extends reach to civilians affected by conflict. According to the Nepalese Military Public Relations and Information Directorate, 297 female peacekeepers are currently deployed across various UN missions, representing 7.45 % of the total contingent. Nepal has set a target of exceeding 10 % for female participation. In addition, eight women serve as military liaison officers, staff officers and other support roles, accounting for 8.79 % of the personnel in those positions. The activities led by Lt. Col. Thapa in the Congo mission demonstrate how female peacekeepers can take on comprehensive security responsibilities, protect civilians, build trust with communities and contribute to long‑term stability in conflict‑affected regions.
