Bahrain’s national cycling federation announced that the country has earned its first Asian medal in track cycling, a bronze won by rider Mohammed Hassan Jawad at the 2026 Asian Games in Thailand. The achievement, described by Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Cycling Federation, as the result of “careful planning and preparation,” marks a milestone for the sport in the Kingdom and sets the stage for future participation in the Asian Games and the Olympic Games. The federation’s strategy focuses on talent identification, development programmes and expanding competition at the continental and international levels. In addition to the track discipline, the federation has broadened its road‑cycling programme, launching a series of races that include men, women, juniors, amateurs and national team riders. The series has attracted a growing number of female participants, signalling increased interest in women’s cycling in Bahrain. Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad highlighted the importance of international training camps. Mohammed Hassan Jawad and fellow rider Hassan Aqeel Thamer spent two weeks in Japan, where they trained on a 250‑metre track and learned the technical nuances of the sport. They then moved to Spain for a second camp that emphasized physical conditioning and competitive racing. The camps were designed to prepare the riders for the Asian Games, where Jawad secured the bronze in the pursuit event after a tactical adjustment in the final laps. The federation also praised the “Golden Generation” league, a programme launched with the support of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. The league has produced several riders who have progressed to the national team, including Jawad and Abdulaziz Al Hamri. Sheikh Khaled noted that the league serves as a platform for early talent discovery and development. Looking ahead, the federation plans to continue its track‑cycling programme, including further overseas camps and the procurement of additional track bikes. Currently, Bahrain owns only three track bicycles, a limitation that the federation aims to address in order to broaden participation. The federation’s board has expressed a commitment to sustaining investment in track cycling, supporting the Golden Generation league, and providing opportunities for riders to compete abroad. The federation’s next priorities include participation in the upcoming Arab Championships in Syria, continued development of the track programme, and long‑term goals of competing at the Asian Games and qualifying for the Olympic Games. Sheikh Khaled emphasized that achieving these objectives will require sustained planning, consistent support and the continued growth of the sport’s infrastructure.
