Friedrich Merz has announced that he will remain in his position as leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) despite the party’s poor performance in recent state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
According to exit polls cited by the BBC, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party secured approximately 38 percent of the vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) received about 36 percent. The CDU recorded significantly lower results in the region.
Despite the electoral setbacks, Merz confirmed his intention to continue leading the party.
