Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has stated that the peace the nation has built over the past two decades is being threatened by ongoing conflict along the Cambodia-Thailand border. In a message marking the International Day of Peace on September 21, the Prime Minister called on the Thai government to respect existing agreements and resolve border disputes through peaceful means and international law.
Prime Minister Hun Manet noted that border conflicts have resulted in loss of life and disrupted the livelihoods of residents in border regions, leaving thousands of families unable to return to their homes. He emphasized that while international law is essential, maintaining peace requires genuine political will and a commitment to implementation.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to the principles of sovereignty, equality, and the non-use of force. He urged Thailand to engage in dialogue to reduce tensions and build mutual trust, aiming for harmonious coexistence between the two nations. He highlighted that Cambodia’s current peace was achieved through the Win-Win policy, which ended the country’s civil war in 1998.
Reflecting on Cambodia’s history, the Prime Minister recalled the nation’s struggle for independence from France in 1953, the subsequent civil war, and the Khmer Rouge regime. He noted that since 2006, Cambodia has contributed 10,912 peacekeepers to United Nations missions across 10 countries, including Chad, Sudan, Lebanon, and Mali. The United Nations recognized Cambodia’s 20-year contribution to international peacekeeping efforts in 2026.
Looking toward the future, the Prime Minister stated that peace remains the foundation for Cambodia’s economic development, poverty reduction, and infrastructure growth. He noted that the national economy is projected to grow by 4.1 percent in 2026. Furthermore, he highlighted that Cambodia is preparing to host the 20th Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh on November 15 and 16, 2026. The summit is expected to bring together leaders from 93 member states to discuss geopolitical tensions and multilateral cooperation for sustainable peace.
