Apple adds Thailand to Tap to Pay guide, but Apple Pay remains unconfirmed

Apple has quietly listed Thailand in its official guide for Tap to Pay on iPhone, a move that has sparked speculation about the arrival of Apple Pay in the country. The listing appears in Apple’s Business User Guide for the Asia-Pacific region, placing Thailand alongside Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Vietnam. However, the two services are not the same.

Tap to Pay on iPhone is a merchant tool that allows businesses to accept contactless payments using only an iPhone. Apple Pay, on the other hand, is a consumer payment method that lets users load their credit or debit cards into the iPhone Wallet. While they often launch together, being listed for one does not guarantee the other. Apple’s official list of Apple Pay-supported countries still does not include Thailand.

The listing suggests Apple is working on technical and business infrastructure with local partners. The Philippines offers a cautionary tale: local bank BPI has completed tokenisation for Apple Pay, yet the service is still not live there because Apple has not switched it on. For now, Thailand’s payment landscape remains dominated by QR systems like PromptPay and cash, but the direction of travel is clear. Thai consumers may soon be able to use Apple Pay, but the final confirmation must come from Apple and local banks.
