Popular social media couple Anil and Kineta James have opened up about one of the most difficult periods of their marriage, sharing how grief tested their relationship but ultimately pushed them to better understand each other and rebuild their connection.
The James family has developed a loyal online following through humorous videos, relatable husband-and-wife moments, family content and candid glimpses into everyday life. Their content often centres around their natural chemistry, playful banter and experiences as a Caribbean family, while content creation has also become part of the business they have built together.
However, behind the laughter, the couple revealed that there was a period when their marriage was under serious strain as they navigated the loss of their son, D’Angelo.
During a lengthy and candid conversation shared on their YouTube channel, Anilkinetajames, Kineta said there was a point when she genuinely believed their marriage could end.
“When Anil and I started to go through a really tough part in our marriage, where I really thought we were about to get a divorce,” she recalled.
The couple explained that one of their biggest challenges was recognising that they processed grief very differently.
Kineta described herself as someone who needs emotional connection and conversation, while Anil said his way of coping has long been to compartmentalise difficult emotions, remain occupied and focus on taking care of his family.
Those different approaches sometimes collided.
Because Anil and Kineta also work together, disagreements within their business relationship began spilling into their personal lives. Things that may have once been minor disagreements became harder to navigate while both were carrying grief.
Kineta said there came a point when she felt she was no longer being understood, while Anil felt overwhelmed by situations he believed were becoming unnecessarily complicated.
Their usual closeness was affected, and the couple entered what they described as a period of emotional distance.
Rather than allowing that difficult chapter to define their marriage, however, Kineta said she sought counsel and began focusing heavily on her faith and personal healing.
She said prayer and periods of quiet reflection helped her realise she could not expect Anil, or other members of their family, to experience grief exactly as she did.
That understanding became an important turning point.
Kineta also spoke about learning to accept the different ways their older son expressed his grief and remembered his brother, while Anil said he eventually understood that those expressions were part of his son’s own healing process.
Slowly, the couple said, the pieces of their relationship began coming back together.
They became more intentional about communication, choosing the right moments for difficult conversations and recognising when one person needed space.
The Jameses also spoke candidly about restoring intimacy in their marriage, saying reconnecting as husband and wife became part of rebuilding the emotional bond between them. At the same time, Kineta stressed that intimacy should never replace necessary conversations.
Their message throughout the discussion remained centred on balance, understanding and allowing life to continue after loss.
The couple also addressed criticism they have received for laughing, smiling and sharing humorous content despite what their family has experienced.
They said some people appear to believe that grief should always look like sadness and that someone enjoying life after a loss somehow means they no longer care.
For Anil and Kineta, that could not be further from the truth.
Anil explained that memories of his son can still hit him suddenly and painfully, but said he has learned that constantly remaining in sadness is not healthy for him.
Humour has also been one of his coping mechanisms since childhood, he said, and he has often used laughter to help Kineta through difficult moments.
Kineta praised her husband for having an ability to make her laugh even when she finds herself slipping into a painful emotional space.
She said those moments have helped her get through many difficult days.
The couple stressed that moving forward does not mean forgetting their son.
Instead, they see laughter, faith, family and continuing to live as part of learning how to carry the loss.
Kineta also encouraged anyone who feels unable to escape a consistently dark emotional place after a loss to seek counselling or appropriate support.
Looking back at the difficult period in their marriage, she said she is grateful their separation emotionally did not become permanent.
Kineta admitted she once feared they might become one of the couples whose relationship ended following the loss of a child.
Instead, the experience became a lesson in patience, communication, faith and accepting that two people can love the same person deeply while grieving in completely different ways.
For followers accustomed to seeing the Jameses joke, tease each other and share family moments online, their latest conversation offered another side of the couple behind the content.
Their message was ultimately one of hope: grief changed their family and challenged their marriage, but they have continued finding reasons to laugh, love and move forward together.
