Recent election results in Germany indicate significant shifts in the political landscape, with notable gains for the Left party in Berlin and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to initial estimates reported by ARD, both the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have experienced losses in both regions.
In Berlin, the Left party has emerged as the leading force with 24.5 percent of the vote, marking an increase of 12.3 percentage points. The CDU follows with 20 percent, a decline of 8.2 points. The AfD holds the third position with 16 percent, up 6.9 points. The Greens received 15 percent, a decrease of 3.4 points, while the SPD recorded 12 percent, down 6.4 points. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) secured 5 percent of the vote.
In the state elections for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD has secured a leading position with 37 percent, more than doubling its previous support by 20.3 percentage points. The SPD follows closely with 35.5 percent, a decrease of 4.1 points. The Left party received 7.5 percent, down 2.4 points. Both the CDU and the Greens recorded 5.5 percent, representing declines of 7.8 and 0.8 points respectively. For the CDU, this result marks its lowest percentage since German reunification. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance also reached 5 percent in this region.
