Sibomana Jean Baptiste, a 32‑year‑old resident of Huye district, died at CHUB hospital after being assaulted during a robbery in Gisagara district. The incident occurred in the Kibilizi sector, near Muyira and Musaraba, on the evening of an unspecified date. According to Minani Félicien, Sibomana’s brother and a 26‑year‑old resident of the same area, the attack took place around 9 p.m. while the two were drinking alcohol. “We were with my elder brother to have a drink. Unknown people attacked us, beat us, and stole our phones and money,” Minani told reporters. He added that he tried to fight back but was injured, and that his brother was taken to the hospital but later died. Minani said he had attempted to defend himself and his brother, but the assailants were able to overpower them. He reported that the family was taken to the hospital, but Sibomana died after being admitted. Local residents have expressed concern over the prevalence of robbery and illegal alcohol sales in the area. Bizimana Enock, a resident of the Cyimana sector, said the incidents “create anxiety among the community.” He added that “the area is known for robbery and theft, largely driven by the sale of illicit alcohol.” Residents are calling for an investigation into the source of the illegal beverages and for authorities to take action against those involved. CIP Hassan Kamanzi, spokesperson for the Rwanda Police in the Southern Province, confirmed the death and said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the assault and to identify those responsible. “The investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack and to bring those involved to justice,” he said. He urged the family of the victim to file a complaint with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) and advised the public to report any suspicious activity promptly. Kamanzi also warned that perpetrators of such crimes would be prosecuted in accordance with the law and urged the community to remain vigilant and avoid activities that threaten public safety.
