El oeste de México en alerta por el huracán Simón, entre suspensiones y evacuaciones

The Mexican government has placed 24 municipalities in the western states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán and Nayarit under a suspension of non‑essential activities in response to the approaching Category 4 hurricane Simón, which is expected to make landfall on Sunday. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on X that the suspension would take effect at 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT) today. She urged residents to stay in safe locations and avoid unnecessary travel. The National Civil Protection Coordinator, Laura Velázquez Alzúa, also called for the evacuation of high‑risk areas and for people to move to temporary shelters before 16:00 local time. She warned that homes not meeting safety standards and areas prone to flooding or landslides should be evacuated immediately, adding, “Do not wait until conditions worsen to seek safety.” She further advised residents not to leave if their homes are in secure locations. The suspended activities include commercial and recreational operations. The directive aims to protect lives, according to a Civil Protection notice. The municipalities affected are: Jalisco – Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, La Huerta, Cihuatlán, Cuautitlán de García Barragán, Villa Purificación, San Sebastián del Oeste, Mascota, Talpa de Allende. Colima – Armería, Tecomán, Manzanillo, Minatitlán, Comala. Nayarit – Bahía de Banderas, Compostela, Xalisco, San Blas, Tepic, Santiago Ixcuintla. Michoacán – Aquila, Coahuayana, Lázaro Cárdenas. Velázquez said the suspension would remain in place until conditions are safe for resumption. She confirmed that Simón is still forecast to make landfall on Sunday, with a possible impact in the morning between La Huerta and Tomatlán in Jalisco. Meteorological data from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) indicate that Simón reached Category 4 during the early hours of Saturday after intensifying from a tropical storm on Thursday to a Category 2 hurricane on Friday. The system is moving north at about 2 km h⁻¹, with sustained winds of 240 km h⁻¹ and gusts up to 295 km h⁻¹. At 12:00 local time (18:00 GMT), the storm’s center was approximately 185 km south‑southwest of Manzanillo, Colima, and 345 km south‑southeast of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco. Authorities warn of extraordinary rainfall—over 250 mm—in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco, which could cause river and stream rises, landslides, urban flooding and surface water accumulation. The hurricane is expected to strengthen further in the coming hours, potentially reaching Category 4 before making landfall in the early hours of Sunday.
