„A venit ca un trăsnet pe cerul senin”. Președintele Israelului, surprins de decizia lui Trump privind ajutorul militar

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on Tuesday that the United States’ decision to cut military aid to Israel is a major concern for the country. Herzog spoke with the Yashar party, led by Gadi Eisenkot, the main rival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a meeting that was reported by CNN. “The problem of American aid worries me a great deal,” Herzog told the party. “We have a memorandum of understanding with the United States that should last until 2028, and that is one of our major objectives. Therefore a government must be formed and we must avoid repeated elections.” The U.S. memorandum of understanding (MOU) provides Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military assistance for the purchase of American weapons. The MOU is set to expire in 2028, but President Donald Trump announced in a telephone interview with Fox News on the day of the U.S. mid‑term elections that the aid would be halted this year, two years before the MOU’s official expiration. Trump said, “We give more than anyone else. Israel is our number one partner; we give more than anyone else, and they no longer need this aid.” The announcement came without detailed explanation from the White House. Prime Minister Netanyahu has not yet issued a public comment on the Trump decision. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said he is seeking clarification on the implications of the aid cut. In an interview with Israeli Channel 12 News, Huckabee defended the continued U.S. military assistance, noting that it has become increasingly unpopular among both Democrats and Republicans. “Americans need to understand the value of this relationship,” Huckabee said. “It’s not about what the U.S. invests, but what we get in return. Perhaps we haven’t done enough to help the American public recognize and appreciate the partnership with Israel, which has brought benefits every day.” Huckabee also criticized Vice‑President J.D. Vance, who on the social‑media platform X claimed that the U.S.–Israel relationship contributed to Republican losses in the mid‑term elections. “I don’t believe that support for Israel is toxic in the conservative wing of the Republican Party,” Huckabee said. The U.S. aid cut has sparked debate in Washington and Tel Aviv over the future of the long‑standing U.S.–Israel security partnership. The Israeli government is now under pressure to form a new coalition and address the potential impact of the aid reduction on its defense budget.
