Presidente paraguayo Peña dice que se presentará a juicio político ante el Congreso

President Santiago Peña announced on Thursday that he will appear before the Senate to defend himself against the impeachment proceedings that have been brought against him. The announcement came amid a banking crisis that has frozen deposits for about three million people—nearly half of Paraguay’s population—and ongoing protests that prompted Peña to submit his resignation, which remains pending. In a post on X, Peña said, “Ante la continuidad del juicio político, me presentaré y ejerceré mi derecho a la defensa. Lo haré con argumentos y pruebas, con respeto a la Constitución y a las instituciones de la República.” He added that he would present his case with evidence and respect for the constitution and national institutions. The Senate convened an extraordinary session on Thursday night to appoint the authorities that will oversee the impeachment process. A second session was scheduled for Friday morning, during which Peña is expected to appear and the proceedings will begin. Thousands of protesters gathered outside the National Congress in Asunción in support of the impeachment. According to the police, the crowd numbered around 5,000. The demonstrators carried signs and shouted slogans such as “Fuera Santi Peña, que devuelvan la plata” (“Get rid of Santi Peña, return the money”). An AFP journalist reported clashes between the protesters and police in the area. The impeachment case is part of a broader crisis that has seen widespread public anger over the banking collapse and the government’s handling of the situation. Peña’s resignation letter has not yet been accepted, leaving the political status of the presidency in limbo as the Senate moves forward with the trial.
