Boric: las victorias de Lula y los demócratas no garantizan cambios en Latinoamérica

Former Chilean president Gabriel Boric, who served from 2022 to 2026, cautioned on Thursday that electoral victories for left‑wing leaders in Brazil and for the Democratic Party in the United States do not automatically translate into political change across Latin America. Speaking at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Boric said that each country has its own reality. “Lula cannot solve Chile’s problems, and Mamdani cannot solve Bolivia’s,” he told the audience, referring to Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and New York City mayor Eric Mamdani. He warned that citizens and left‑wing groups should not “build idols of foreign politicians” or “turn them into gods.” Boric emphasized that democracy must work to improve the quality of life for the majority of people. He also noted the Democratic Party’s success in the U.S. midterm elections held on Tuesday, joking that he does not trust anyone who “is sure of everything,” a reference to former President Donald Trump. The former president highlighted the victories of Democratic candidates in Texas, including Senator James Talarico and Governor Gina Hinojosa, calling them “incredible.” He praised Abdul El‑Sayed, the Democratic candidate from Michigan who will become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history. Boric, who had been critical of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government, said that left‑wing parties across the region must maintain an ethical standard that “generates trust among the people.” He criticized Venezuela for becoming a dictatorship and lamented that progressive leaders in the region had not condemned the situation, stating, “Coherence is very important, and I think we have lost it.” Boric left the Chilean presidency in March after his coalition lost the national election to the right‑wing candidate José Antonio Kast.
